Glen Hansard, Oscar-winning Irish singer-songwriter, dies aged 56 in motorcycle crash
Glen Hansard died in a single-vehicle motorcycle crash on the outskirts of Dublin in the early hours of Wednesday 29 July 2026. He was 56.
What happened over the following six days is the part worth recording, because very few musicians anywhere are buried the way this one was. Here is the sequence.
Tuesday 28 July, evening — The Wren’s Nest, Strawberry Beds
He spends the night at a pub on the Lower Road in the Strawberry Beds, a stretch of the Liffey valley on the western edge of Dublin, playing a traditional session. Someone films him singing. The pub later confirms to the Irish Times that the video circulating online was shot there that night.
It is an entirely ordinary evening, and it is the last public performance of a fifty-six-year-old Academy Award winner: a trad session in a pub, unannounced, for whoever happened to be in.
That is not a coincidence of scheduling. It is the whole shape of the man’s career, which had begun in the same city, on the street, without a stage.
Wednesday 29 July, before 4.30am — Lower Road, between Tinkers Hill and Rugged Lane
A single-vehicle motorcycle crash. An Garda Síochána issue a brief statement that does not name him: “The motorcyclist, a man in his 50s, was treated at the scene” and was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.
The location is a few minutes from the pub.
Wednesday 29 July, morning — the news breaks
RTÉ, the BBC and the Irish Times confirm the identity through the day. Tributes come from the Irish arts world and from politicians, which in Ireland is a distinction not many musicians earn.
To understand why, you need the previous fifty-six years.
21 April 1970 — Ballymun
Glen James Hansard is born in Ballymun, a public-housing district in north Dublin, the second of six children of James and Catherine Hansard.
He leaves school at 13 and starts busking on Grafton Street. That detail gets repeated in every profile of him ever written, and it is usually presented as charming. It was not charming. It was a thirteen-year-old with a guitar making money on a street.
1990 — The Frames
He co-founds The Frames and fronts them for the next thirty-six years. Their debut album arrives in 1991. Fitzcarraldo in 1996 and Burn the Maps in 2004 make them one of the defining Irish rock bands of their era, with songs including “Fake” and “Finally.” They open for Bob Dylan and play Lollapalooza and the Hollywood Bowl.
The Frames never became internationally huge, and Hansard never left them for something that might have.
1991 — The Commitments
He plays Outspan Foster, the guitarist, in Alan Parker’s film of Roddy Doyle’s novel. He is 21. It makes him recognisable in Ireland years before anyone outside it knows his name.
He does not pursue an acting career off the back of it. He goes back to the band.
2006 — Once, and the Swell Season
John Carney makes a film for almost no money about a Dublin busker and a Czech immigrant. Hansard plays the busker. Markéta Irglová plays the pianist. They write the songs themselves, and form a duo, the Swell Season, named after a Josef Škvorecký novel.
Sixteen years after he formed The Frames, this is the thing that makes him internationally known — and it is a film about the life he had actually been living since he was thirteen.
24 February 2008 — the Kodak Theatre
“Falling Slowly,” written by Hansard and Irglová, wins the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The soundtrack goes on to a Grammy nomination.
Irglová, who was 19, was cut off by the orchestra during the acceptance and brought back on stage after the commercial break to finish. It remains one of the few genuinely unscripted moments in modern Oscar history.
Once later becomes a Broadway musical and wins eight Tony Awards. Hansard’s song outgrows him entirely, which is a thing that happens to about one songwriter in a generation.
8 December 2023 — Nenagh, County Tipperary
At Shane MacGowan’s funeral at St Mary of the Rosary Church, Hansard and Lisa O’Neill perform “Fairytale of New York.” The congregation dances in the aisles.
It is the clearest single illustration of what he had become in Ireland by then: not a pop star, but the person you call when something needs to be sung properly.
20 October 2023 — the last album
All That Was East Is West of Me Now, his fifth solo studio album, is released on Plateau and Anti-, produced by Dave Odlum. It is well received. It turns out to be the last studio album released in his lifetime.
Spring 2026 — the tour, and the project
He announces a sixteen-date European tour beginning 30 April 2026 in Paris and taking in the Roundhouse in London — staged, according to the announcement, in support of a new project that was to be revealed later.
It was never announced.
Monday 3 August 2026 — the Royal Hospital Kilmainham
His body lies in repose in the Baroque Chapel at the Irish Museum of Modern Art from 11am to 4pm. Traditional musicians play beneath the stained glass. His wicker coffin rests on a table dressed with greenery and apples, two of his guitars at the foot of it.
More than 11,000 people file past over five hours, many of them putting a hand on the coffin as they pass.
Eleven thousand people, on a Monday, for a folk singer.
Tuesday 4 August 2026 — St Patrick’s Cathedral
The funeral is held at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin.
He is survived by his wife, Maire Saaritsa, whom he married in 2022, and their young son.
The unannounced project is the loose thread. There is a body of work that was finished or half-finished for a tour that had already happened, with no release attached to it. What his estate and his label do with that is the only part of this story still open.
He left school at thirteen to sing on Grafton Street. Forty-three years later, eleven thousand people queued in Kilmainham to say goodbye. Everything in between was the same job.
