Tiffany Haddish Finally Closes the Book on Her Four-Year Georgia DUI Case

After nearly four years of hearings, postponements, and headlines she probably wished would go away, Tiffany Haddish has finally drawn a line under one of the messier chapters of her personal life. On Tuesday, the actor and comedian pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor drunk-driving charge tied to a 2022 arrest in Georgia — and, importantly, walked away without any additional jail time hanging over her.

The 45-year-old appeared by video for the hearing, which played out in a Fayetteville courtroom just as a trial was set to begin. Instead of rolling the dice in front of a jury, she took a negotiated deal and pleaded guilty to a single count of driving under the influence, “less safe.” In return, the rest of the traffic charges from that night were dropped.

What the deal actually looks like

The terms are the kind of thing you’d expect for a first-time misdemeanor resolution rather than anything dramatic. Haddish was placed on 12 months of probation, ordered to complete a substance-abuse evaluation, and told to stay away from drugs and alcohol while she serves it out. Her driver’s license in the state has been suspended, and she was given credit for the short stint she spent in custody right after the original arrest.

In other words: no new time behind bars, but not a clean walk either. It’s the sort of compromise that lets both sides move on — the prosecution gets a guilty plea on the books, and Haddish gets to put a four-year headache in the rearview mirror.

True to form, she couldn’t resist a moment of levity even in a courtroom. She told the judge she’d honestly “like to fuss a little bit,” but figured that after four long years, agreeing to the deal was the faster route out of the whole ordeal.

How it started

The case goes all the way back to the early hours of a January morning in 2022. Someone dialed 911 after spotting a driver who appeared to be asleep at the wheel of an SUV, foot resting on the brake, near Peachtree City — a quiet community about 30 miles south of Atlanta. An officer found a vehicle matching the description and pulled Haddish over as she turned into a neighborhood. Police said at the time they believed she was impaired, and she was booked and later released on bond.

She pleaded not guilty and dug in, and the case dragged on far longer than anyone expected. Earlier this year, her legal team even asked a judge to throw the whole thing out, arguing that dragging it out for more than four years had taken a real toll on her — both personally and professionally. That motion didn’t succeed, which set the stage for this week’s trial and, ultimately, the plea.

It wasn’t her only brush with a DUI case, either. She was arrested again in late 2023 in Los Angeles, and that matter was resolved separately in California the following year, with the more serious charges reduced.

A fresh chapter

Legal drama aside, Haddish remains one of the most recognizable comedic voices of her generation. She broke through in a big way with Girls Trip and kept the momentum going with films like Night School, Like a Boss, and The Kitchen. She’s an Emmy and Grammy winner, and her candid memoir The Last Black Unicorn landed her on the bestseller lists and earned real critical love.

With this case finally settled, she’s free to shift her full attention back to the work that made her a household name — and, if the tone in that courtroom is any indication, she’s ready to do it with her sense of humor fully intact.
