Taylor Swift Just Hired Hollywood’s Most Decorated Cinematographer for a Music Video. Her Movie Is Still Waiting.

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 28, 2026 — Taylor Swift premiered the music video for “Patient Zero” during Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards. It stars Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell and was shot by three-time Oscar winner Emmanuel Lubezki. By Monday, “patient zero music video” had passed 100,000 searches in the United States on Google Trends. The video’s cast and crew raise a bigger question that most of the coverage has passed over: the feature film Swift promised Hollywood nearly four years ago.

The Video in Brief

The Hollywood Reporter said Swift debuted the clip right after accepting the VMAs’ first Artist Director Honors. The award was presented by Johnson, who stars in the video. According to TheWrap, the single came out on Friday as part of “The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore,” a four-song expansion that also includes “Cleveland!,” “Pink Clouding” and “Babylon.”

The story is a gothic thriller, not a standard pop video. As TheWrap described it, Johnson plays the wife of an abusive husband played by Farrell and is haunted by visions of Swift, his former partner. She is sick for reasons she can’t understand and is accused of drinking too much. Only in the final moments does the video reveal that Farrell’s character has been poisoning her, the same way he killed the heiress Swift plays. Just Jared reported that Cara Delevingne appears as another woman tied to Farrell’s character, a part Swift jokingly called the “lusty other woman” in a post after the premiere.

Swift said she used the video to explore several genres she loves, including gothic ghost stories, true crime and psychological thrillers, according to Just Jared. Those are the genres of a feature film, not a three-minute promotional clip.

Look at the Credits

The crew is the most revealing part of the video. Slant Magazine reported that it was shot by Emmanuel Lubezki, and wrote that the result has the visual texture and polish of a contemporary Hollywood blockbuster. Lubezki is the only cinematographer to win the Academy Award three years in a row: for “Gravity” in 2014, “Birdman” in 2015 and “The Revenant” in 2016. He works with filmmakers such as Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro González Iñárritu and Terrence Malick. Pop singers rarely hire him.

Swift made the point herself. Just Jared reported that in a post after the premiere she called working with Lubezki “something out of a dream sequence” and said she learned by watching him work. That is how a director describes preparing for something bigger.

It is also not a one-off. For “The Fate of Ophelia,” the video that won Video of the Year on Sunday, Rolling Stone reported that Swift credited cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, choreographer Mandy Moore, production designer Ethan Tobman and editor Chancler Haynes. Prieto is the Oscar-nominated cinematographer behind Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” and “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.” Across two consecutive videos, Swift has worked with two of the most respected cinematographers in the film industry.

The Movie That Hasn’t Arrived

In December 2022, Searchlight Pictures announced that Swift would make her feature directing debut with the studio, from an original script she wrote. Variety noted at the time that Searchlight is the Oscar-winning label behind “Nomadland” and “The Shape of Water.” No plot or casting details were released. Searchlight presidents David Greenbaum and Matthew Greenfield called her “a once in a generation artist and storyteller.”

The film then stalled. In October 2025, Variety reported that Searchlight had hoped to fast-track the project, but those plans ended when Swift’s Eras Tour was announced and then extended. The studio was described as waiting for Swift to call with updates, and neither Swift’s representatives nor Searchlight commented.

Screenwriting reports have conflicted. The Stereogum report said Jeff Sneider’s InSneider newsletter claimed Searchlight had brought in British playwright Alice Birch, a writer on “Succession” and “Normal People,” to rewrite the script. E! News then quoted a source close to production who said the rumor was false and that Swift was still the only screenwriter. As of this writing, StarEvolutionUS found no public announcement of a title, a cast or a start date for the film.

The Farrell Connection

The casting of “Patient Zero” draws an interesting line back to Searchlight. Colin Farrell starred in “The Banshees of Inisherin,” the Searchlight film directed by Martin McDonagh that earned Farrell an Oscar nomination. When Swift’s feature was announced in December 2022, IndieWire noted that Variety had just paired her with McDonagh for its “Directors on Directors” conversation series. So the lead actor of Swift’s most ambitious video to date came from the studio and filmmaking circle she was part of when the feature was first announced.

To be clear, this is StarEvolutionUS’s observation, not a reported fact: nothing on record says Farrell, Johnson or Lubezki is attached to Swift’s feature. Swift thanked Farrell and Johnson for trusting her with their time, taste and talent, according to TheWrap. That is how a director talks about a cast, and it matches her public comments about wanting to direct a full-length film.

Her Track Record Behind the Camera

Swift is not a beginner at directing. According to Billboard, she wrote and directed the 14-minute “All Too Well: The Short Film,” which screened at the Tribeca and Toronto film festivals in 2022, after earlier directing the videos for “The Man,” “Cardigan” and “Willow.” In 2022, IMDb noted, she became the only solo artist to win two Best Direction awards at the VMAs.

On Sunday she added another. Billboard reported that she won Best Direction for “Opalite” alongside Video of the Year and the Artist Director Honors. Those wins made her the most-awarded artist in VMA history, as this site covered earlier today.

Her acting record gives her a reason to control the process. Variety’s 2022 announcement pointed out that “Cats” and David O. Russell’s “Amsterdam” were notorious box-office failures, although Swift had only small roles in both. Directing lets her control the result in a way acting in other people’s films never did.

Why It Matters

Hollywood usually treats pop stars who move into film as a gamble. Swift’s approach has been different. She has tested herself behind the camera in short, high-visibility music videos, working with film-industry crews and Oscar-level cinematographers. With “Patient Zero,” she directed two established film actors through a full thriller plot and hired a cinematographer who usually works on major features. If the goal was to show she can direct a movie, she has now done nearly everything short of making one.

The question going forward is simple. Is “Patient Zero” a stand-alone project, or a rehearsal for the Searchlight film?
